Major Areas of Research

UPH pediatricians work with scientists at the Steele Children’s Research Center to research causes and develop cures for childhood illnesses and diseases.  Current studies include:

  • Investigating the molecular pathways directing normal and abnormal heart valve development in order to improve the diagnosis and repair of severe congenital heart defects.
  • Searching for the genetic factors associated with Crohn’s disease.  Finding these genes is the first step in developing new and better therapies that will help children manage this disease.
  • Exploring how epidermal growth factor (EGF), when added to baby formula, reduces the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis – a lift threatening intestinal disease that kills 30% of premature babies.
