| UPH pathologists are responsible for clinical laboratory services and provide support for many other medical specialties by reviewing tests for abnormalities. UPH pathologists provide professional expertise in the areas of surgical, autopsy and transplantation pathology, as well as dermatopathology (skin diseases) and neuropathology (diseases of the nervous system).
Pathology is the study of changes in cells, tissues and organs which can lead to disease.
Special Programs
Telemedicine (telepathology) provides educational and consultation services to rural areas within Arizona, which do not have ready access to pathology and laboratory medicine services. Telemedicine is used by UPH trauma surgeons in saving lives across Arizona and has received national awards. Telemedicine is recognized as one of the premier programs at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. UltraClinics: With the rapid breast diagnosis services of UltraClinics, pioneered at UPH Hospital at Kino Campus, a woman can have a breast biopsy and receive the results in hours, instead of weeks. Community Outreach
UPH Pathologists serve the greater Arizona community by providing care for Pima County employees, as well as at Skilled Nursing Facilities and St. Elizabeth of Hungary Clinic. They also offer educational outreach programs to benefit the local medical community.

Major Areas of Research
Research activities range from experimental and molecular pathology, to biomedical technology transfer, to clinical studies. Lisa Rimsza, MD, for example, is conducting lymphoma research including new methods of diagnosis and molecular targets for treatment.
