University Physicians Hospital is a comprehensive medical center and hospital that features nationally and internationally recognized clinics, programs and physicians. It is slated to become Southern Arizona's next academic medical campus. New additions to the campus will be built on the 70 acres surrounding the hospital, creating numerous specialty treatment centers, as well as advanced teaching and state-of-the-art research facilities.

The first of its kind in Southern Arizona, da Vinci is a minimally invasive surgical system. UPH surgeons are currently using it to perform radical prostatectomies, nissen fundoplications, myomectomies, hysterectomies and pelvic reconstructive procedures. |

HISTORY
In June 2004, University Physicians Healthcare reached an agreement with Pima County to assume full control of the 200-bed Kino Community Hospital.
The 50-year lease agreement included $127 million in funding from Pima County over 10 years to re-establish UPH Hospital as a full-service hospital and outpatient treatment center. UPH is paying $10 per year to lease the 280,000 square foot hospital.
Per the lease agreement with Pima County, UPH is restoring the hospital to full-service, as well as improving patient care and training programs. The following advances have been completed:
- August 2006: UPH Retina Center opens at University Physicians Hospital and Outpatient Clinics and is housed with over $300,000 in top-line equipment for diagnosis and treatment of retinal and vitreous disorders.
- May 2006: $36 million in bonds approved by voters to expand and improve the psychiatric inpatient hospital facilities at University Physicians Hospital.
- May 2006: $18 million in bonds approved by voters for a specialized psychiatric urgent care facility at University Physicians Hospital.
- May 2006: Inpatient dialysis services expanded.
- March 2006: Toshiba EXCELART Vantage MRI System installed.
- August 2005: UPH moved all its neurology services into renovated clinics, expanding programs and adding new physicians. The clinic now offers the widest range of neurological services in the area.
- July 2005: UPH took over management of the Emergency Department and recruited additional physicians.
- July 2005: A combined pediatric and emergency medicine residency program was established. It is the third such training program in the US and the only one west of Indianapolis.
- May 2005: $1.5 million da Vinci surgical system installed as the first in Southern Arizona, used for nissen fundoplications, myomectomies, hysterectomies, pelvic reconstruction procedures and radical prostatectomies.
- April 2005: Inpatient dialysis services offered
- December 2005: Intensive care unit opened
- August 2004: Additional physicians and staff have been recruited for numerous specialties including medical and surgical services.
